We successfully completed our first Summer Training on Low-cost methods for Art Examination.
We got 5 students from Italy, Poland, Spain and Greece.
Our Training courses are aimed to art conservation professionals that want to add new technical examination tools to their skills.
Our Summer Training programs are only open to students currently enrolled in an educational program.
We offered our first Students Summer Training in Aug 1-3 2016 in our Studio in Italy. We covered Technical Photography, Infrared Reflectography, Reflectance spectroscopy, RTI and Multispectral Imaging.
1st Day. Technical Photography
Technical Photography represents a collection of broadband spectral images realized with a modified full spectrum digital camera and different lighting sources and filters. We will practice hands-on shooting and editing for these technical photos:
RAK, Raking light Photography
UVF, Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography
UVR, Ultraviolet Reflected Photography
IR, Infrared Photography
IRT, Infrared Transmitted Photography
IRF, Infrared Fluorescence Photography
IRFC, Infrared False Color Photography
2nd Day. Panoramic Infrared Reflectography, Reflectance Spectroscopy, RTI
Infrared Reflectography allows to identify underdrawing and pentimenti. We coupled it with the panoramic method in order to acquire infrared reflectograms with a fast and lightwiegth set up.
Reflectance Spectroscopy (RS) shows, for each wavelength, the ratio between the intensity of the reflected light and the incident light, measured with respect to a standard white reference (reflectance). Reflectance spectra provide information useful for the identification of pigments.
Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a computational photographic technique and it is used in a number of fields related to art examination and documentation because it provides a virtual and enhanced visualization of an object’s surface.
3rd Day. Multispectral Imaging
Multispectral Imaging (MSI) is used to map and tentatively identify pigments and in paints on works of art. It is also useful to visually enhance old and faded documents. Thanks to the first crowdfunded research in art conservation science, CHSOS has developed an MSI system using 18 bandpass filter and a full spectrum digital camera that covers the 400-920 nm spectral range.
Shooting spectral images.
Splitting spectral images into RGB channels.
Registering spectral images.
Calibrating spectral images.
Spectra reconstruction and mapping.
Name: Cetty Parisi, ITALY
What are you studying and where?: I’m a student of the two years advanced course in Archaeology and Art History (LM-89) at the University of Tuscia in Viterbo, Italy. In 2014 I graduated first degree in Conservation of Cultural heritage (l-43, diagnostic interclass), University of Tuscia.
Why you want take this Summer 2016 Training : I would like to take the summer training, because I want to specialize in non-invasive diagnostic techniques for cultural heritage, and also they can be economically applied independently to work in the future. I studied a part of the Pelosi Professor at the University of Tuscia these techniques to the diagnostics course and I would like to learn more about other topics.
Name: Jedrzej Musiela, POLAND
What are you studying and where?: I’m studying civil engineering at University of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow
Why you want take this Summer 2016 Training : I would like to specialize in the field of renovation of historic monuments and architecture. My hobby is digitalization of works of art and photographic documentation of architecture. I am very interested in your training because it will let me learn new techniques in the field of photography. I believe that this new competences will be beneficial in my future career.
Name: Miquel Àngel Herrero and Marta Raïch, SPAIN
What are you studying and where?: we are Miquel Àngel Herrero and Marta Raïch, two students of the University of Lleida (Catalonia), Spain. We are
research members of the CAEM team and we are both developing doctorate studies.
Why you want take this Summer 2016 Training : We talked about you, your work and your philosophy of researching to our director. We’ve been following your work and research interests for months, and we are stunned by your investigations. Consequently we would be proud to attend your August training for students, because we are working on technical and multispectral photograph for artwork expertise, and we believe that your low cost methods are in fact valuable technical methods. We both want to add new technical examination tools to our skills, in order to improve our research.
Name: Babis Apostolidis, GREECE
What are you studying and where?: Masters Degree Materials Engineering at University of Ioannina, Greece
Why you want take this Summer 2016 Training : I’m interested mostly on wall paintings and panel and canvas paintings conservation.
