Learn with us. Training at CHSOS Studio, Italy

We just delivered the December 2017 Training program focused on Paintings at CHSOS Studio in Italy (click to see the list of former students). We had two guests, Serena Urry, Chief Conservator at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Julia Betancourt, director of the Conservation Studio Arty in Madrid. During our Training programs, students practice the equipment and become able to produce and interpret all the set of output data. The first-day we use our Technical Photography kit to become able to realize this set of Technical Photography images. On the second day, we explore Infrared Reflectography, RTI and Reflectance spectroscopy using Gorgias, our Reflectance Spectrometer for Art examination. Eventually, the Third day is about Multispectral Imaging, using Antonello, the MSI system and for a final review and consolidation of all the methods.

Training at CHSOS Studio in Italy – 2018 Calendar

Participate in our Training programs organized in the CHSOS Studio in Italy. Our Training courses are aimed at art conservation professionals that want to add new technical examination tools to their skills. We cover Technical Photography, Infrared Reflectography, Reflectance spectroscopy, RTI and Multispectral Imaging.

Choose your field of application. Are you a painting conservator? a paper conservator? Do you do documentation of wall paintings? In order to serve specific professional needs, our upcoming programs are focused on the 3 more common kinds of cultural objects: wall paintings, manuscripts, paintings. These programs present the same set of technical examination methods but focused on different artifacts. For example, Infrared photography can be applied successfully on wall paintings as well as on manuscripts. Though, the information gained from these different objects, as well as the equipment used would be quite different. Thus the need to offer focused programs, to gather together professionals involved in different art conservation sectors.

Program

1st Day. Technical Photography (TP)
Technical Photography represents a collection of broadband spectral images realized with a modified full spectrum digital camera and different lighting sources and filters. We will practice hands-on shooting and editing for these technical photos:
VIS, Visible
RAKRaking light Photography
UVF, Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography
UVR, Ultraviolet Reflected Photography
IR, Infrared Photography
IRT, Infrared Transmitted Photography
IRF, Infrared Fluorescence Photography
IRFC, Infrared False Color Photography

2nd Day. Infrared Reflectography (IRR), Reflectance Spectroscopy (RS), Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI
Infrared Reflectography allows to identify underdrawing and pentimenti. We coupled it with the panoramic method in order to acquire infrared reflectograms with a fast and lightwiegth set up.
Reflectance Spectroscopy (RS) shows, for each wavelength, the ratio between the intensity of the reflected light and the incident light, measured with respect to a standard white reference (reflectance). Reflectance spectra provide information useful for the identification of pigments.
Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a computational photographic technique and it is used in a number of fields related to art examination and documentation because it provides a virtual and enhanced visualization of an object’s surface.

3rd Day. Multispectral Imaging (MSI)
Multispectral Imaging (MSI) is used to map and tentatively identify pigments and in paints on works of art. It is also useful to visually enhance old and faded documents. Thanks to the first crowdfunded research in art conservation science, CHSOS has developed an MSI system using 18 bandpass filter and a full spectrum digital camera that covers the 400-920 nm spectral range.
Shooting spectral images.
Splitting spectral images into RGB channels.
Registering spectral images.
Calibrating spectral images.
Spectra reconstruction and mapping.
