17th-century print of the island of Seram in the Moluccas (19 x 28 cm)

This hand-colored 17th-century print depicts the island of Seram (Ceram) in the Moluccas, a key center of the early modern spice trade. The scene captures European ships anchored near a fortified coastal settlement, surrounded by indigenous vessels and traders, symbolizing the intense commercial and cultural exchanges that characterized this region during the Dutch colonial expansion. Such prints were often produced for European audiences eager for visual accounts of distant colonies and exotic commodities, blending documentary intent with artistic imagination. Beyond its historical and iconographic value, this object offers a rich field for scientific investigation. Analytical techniques such as technical photography, XRF spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy can reveal the composition of pigments and inks, shedding light on the materials and production methods used by early modern printmakers, as well as on later interventions or restorations.

Technical Photography

The strength of Technical Photography is in its diversity of images. While some may appear ordinary, others can uncover crucial details.
In this case study of a 17th-century print of the island of Seram in the Moluccas, the transmitted infrared (IRT) image stands out. Unlike the usual translucent visible photo, it reveals the laid paper structure and its watermark with much greater clarity. This is possible because, under infrared light, the pigments turn transparent and no longer interfere with the visibility of the paper itself.
The UVF image adds another layer of insight. It reveals a drop of staining material—completely invisible to the naked eye—that landed on the paper while it was folded. Under UV fluorescence, the stain becomes clear, extending seamlessly across all the folded sections of the sheet.
