Brazilin, a red colorant, is obtained from several species of trees including brazilwood from Brazil, sappanwood from Asia. Used form antiquity in Asia, sappanwood was introduced in Europe around the 12th century. Eventually it was replaced in the 16th century by brazilwood (containing the same brazilin colorant) since vast quantities of brazilwood forests were discovered in Brazil.
