NY 5 – safflower (safflor)

Extract (Carthamic Acid;) with water from the flowers of safflower (Carthamus tinctoria). Safflower has been cultivated to make the yellow and red dye from early antiquity. The safflower flowers contain 2 colorants. The first one, yellow (safflor) is first extracted with simple cold water. It was used rarely. The second colorant is red (carthamin) and is extracted using an alkali solution. This red safflower (NR 26) was extensively used for textiles in Asia and in Europe from the 18th century. Also, it is documented its use in art.
