PY 216 – Rutile Tin Zinc is an inorganic yellow pigment composed primarily of a mixed oxide of titanium, tin, and zinc. It is a high-performance pigment known for its bright, slightly warm yellow hue, excellent opacity, and exceptional lightfastness. PY 216 is widely used in industrial coatings, plastics, and paints where durability, color stability, and strong covering power are required.

Chemically, PY 216 is based on a rutile-type titanium dioxide lattice modified with tin (Sn) and zinc (Zn) ions. The incorporation of these metal ions enhances the pigment’s chromatic properties, stability, and dispersion, resulting in a warm, clean yellow with excellent hiding power and resistance to degradation from light, heat, and chemical exposure. Its inorganic nature ensures compatibility with a wide range of binders and other pigments without risk of adverse reactions.

In practical applications, Rutile Tin Zinc exhibits strong opacity and high tinting strength, making it effective in both colored and white formulations. Its bright, slightly warm yellow blends well with other yellows, oranges, and earth tones to produce vibrant color mixtures, while its durability makes it suitable for exterior paints, architectural coatings, and industrial applications. In artistic media, it provides excellent coverage and color stability over time, particularly in oil, acrylic, and industrial paints.

From a conservation perspective, PY 216 is highly stable and chemically inert, maintaining chromatic purity and brightness even under prolonged exposure to light and environmental stress.
