Istanbul conservator training in Sicily

Muge Uckan took my training on multispectral imaging for art examination in November. She was trained as a painting conservator in Istanbul, the town she currently lives, and in Florence. She’s exploring possibilities to introduce the multispectral imaging  service in Turkey. As usual, I like to have the training students involved in the art examination projects I do volunteer and promote in Sicily together with other professionals: architects, archaeologists and conservators. Muge’s one week (5 days) training program was pretty packed with visits to 3 field projects.

Muge Uckan visited field projects in Assoro and Aci Sant’Antonio for her training on multispectral imaging.

1st day. Newly discovered Frescoes in my hometown, Aci Sant’Antonio. Muge was involved in the FORS (Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectroscopy) examination of the newly discovered frescoes in Aci Sant’Antonio which were already examined with multispectral imaging and X-ray Fluorescence. We also did some further multispectral documentation.

3rd day. Sicilian cart. Aci S.Antonio is honored to host the famous Master Domenico Di Mauro, currently 100 years old! His pieces are exposed in museums around the world such as Moscow and Tokyo.  The renowned Sicilian hospitality made our work so easy. We were hosted in the painter’s studio and we had access to the oldest pieces in his collection dating back to the early decades of the XX century.

5th day. Assoro. This is a medieval village in the heart of Sicily. Thanks to the collaboration with Raffaello di Mauro it is possible to access the many artworks which Assoro preserves. Raffaello  is an conservation architect with more than 20 years of experience in Sicilian architecture and he has been working on the conservation of a number or historical buildings in Assoro.

It turned out Muge is also a keen photographer and she enjoyed taking pictures in Aci Sant’Antonio, Assoro and Mount Etna.
