The town of Nunziata di Mascali, Sicily, has sponsored in 2013 the restoration of its 19th century canvas painting representing the Annunciation.  Some losses of color had suggested to the restorers the possibility of another painting existing underneath the surface layer. The “strappo” procedure was successfully carried out, revealing another Annunciation, in optimal condition. The complex history of this discovered Annunciation has been further brought to light by diagnostic tests, X-radiography and infrared reflectography that are discussed in this paper. In the first version, the Virgin welcomed the Angel while standing and her arms were drawn towards her chest in an unusual gesture with respect to the traditional representation of the Gospel scene. In the latest version, however, the arrangement is more suited to the style of the time, depicting the Virgin on her knees with open arms.  The posture of the Angel was modified as well, acquiring a twisting movement. This article presents the diagnostic investigations that made the reconstruction of the previous version of the discovered Annunciation possible and illustrates briefly the “strappo” procedure and conservation treatment.
