Training at CHSOS studio – March 2019

Completed 4-days Training at the CHSOS Studio, March 18th-21st. We got 2 participants from Italy and France.
Check out our Calendar for the next one.

Donato Maniello. He is an expert in Spatial Augmented Reality for Cultural Heritage and he runs Studio Glowarp.  This studio is specialized in the application of augmented reality, such as video mapping, to archaeology and historical architecture. Donato has done terrific work and publications in this sector. He is interested in scientific imaging methodologies for wall paintings examination and plans to expand virtual reality into the UV and IR region of the spectrum. Nice idea :-). There is a lot to tell when you look at wall paintings with Technical Photography.

Valentina Freni. Materials’ Chemistry, Lams, Sorbonne Université, Paris. She is making a Ph.D. thesis on the identification of pigments in the painting of the XIX century and she wants to implement Technical Photography to other methods she already has in her lab, such as hyperspectral imaging.

FIRST and SECOND DAY: technical Photography

Technical photography represents a collection of images realized with a modified digital camera sensitive to the spectral range (about 360-1100 nm). Different lighting sources and filters are used to acquire a selection of technical images, with each one providing different information about the object under examination.

THIRD DAY: Multispectral Imaging and Reflectance Spectroscopy

Multispectral Imaging is used to identify and map pigments in polychrome artworks, and to enhance the reading of faded historical documents. Conservators can use this technique to distinguish original
sections in paintings and select the proper conservation procedures.

Reflectance spectroscopy (RS) is a powerful portable technique for the identification of pigments.
An RS spectrum shows the ratio between the intensity of the reflected light and the incident light for each wavelength. The RS spectra can provide information useful for pigments identification.

FOURTH DAY: practice
