We just completed our 2° Summer Training on Practical methods for Art Examination in beautiful Sicily with students from Italy and Belgium and we are launching today our 3° Summer Training for 2018.

Our Training courses are aimed to art conservation professionals that want to add new technical examination tools to their skills. We covered Technical Photography, Infrared Reflectography, Reflectance spectroscopy, RTI and Multispectral Imaging.

Program
1st Day. Technical Photography (TP)
Technical Photography represents a collection of broadband spectral images realized with a modified full spectrum digital camera and different lighting sources and filters. We will practice hands-on shooting and editing for these technical photos:
VIS, Visible
RAK, Raking light Photography
UVF, Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography
UVR, Ultraviolet Reflected Photography
IR, Infrared Photography
IRT, Infrared Transmitted Photography
IRF, Infrared Fluorescence Photography
IRFC, Infrared False Color Photography
2nd Day. Infrared Reflectography (IRR), Reflectance Spectroscopy (RS), Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI)
Infrared Reflectography allows to identify underdrawing and pentimenti. We coupled it with the panoramic method in order to acquire infrared reflectograms with a fast and lightwiegth set up.
Reflectance Spectroscopy (RS) shows, for each wavelength, the ratio between the intensity of the reflected light and the incident light, measured with respect to a standard white reference (reflectance). Reflectance spectra provide information useful for the identification of pigments.
Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a computational photographic technique and it is used in a number of fields related to art examination and documentation because it provides a virtual and enhanced visualization of an object’s surface.
3rd Day. Multispectral Imaging (MSI)
Multispectral Imaging (MSI) is used to map and tentatively identify pigments and in paints on works of art. It is also useful to visually enhance old and faded documents. Thanks to the first crowdfunded research in art conservation science, CHSOS has developed an MSI system using 18 bandpass filter and a full spectrum digital camera that covers the 400-920 nm spectral range.

What are you studying and where?: Hi,
I have a Master in Art history and Archaeology and a Bachelor in computer graphics. And I am now starting a PhD in archaeology at Liège University in Belgium. The topic of the PhD is low-cost multispectral 3D for museums collections. My PhD advisor David Strivay has recommended that I get in contact with you and I think this training would be the perfect opportunity.
Why you want to take this Summer Training : I am already working with 3D for a few years but I am still a beginner at multispectral imaging, therefore, I think your training could be a big help for me to learn more about the differences between IR, IRT, IRF, IRFC, but also about how to process and analyse multispectral data and how to do reflectance spectroscopy. I am also really interested in your training because you also look at low-cost methods.

What are you studying and where?: I just graduated in the Master’s in “Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage” at “Sapienza” University, Rome, but I’m going to undertake an extracurricular traineeship.
Why you want to take this Summer Training: I’d like to be provided with further information about these practical techniques in order to develop confidence and accomplish more easily that traineeship.
