This application case results from a collaboration with Giovanni Landi – a Mobile AR (Augmented Reality) solution engineer. He designs and develops mobile applications based on AR and Realtime 3D and he has a keen interest on art examination and documentation. I am collaborating with Giovanni providing multispectral imaging datasets of works of art to explore the application of Augmented Reality for their visualization. Giovanni developed an app that allows to explore the images switching among the layers using the fingers. The app recognizes the painting and allows the user to interactively explore the multispectral images. Very cool! This new app was just presented at the Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara, CA. Multispectral images provided by CHSOS were used as the case study. Unfortunately, the app is currently available only for beta test. If I understand however, the app will only contain a few pre-entered sample images.
How many images will it contain and what multispectral range will it show?
What I don’t understand is this: In order to apply the AR, the user must stand in front of the original, otherwise it is not AR. How will this be possible for app users who are not next to the original?
Whatever the case, it will be a nice teaching tool.
Hi Moshe, yeas it is a neat tool. Giovanni can tell you more about the technical questions, as if there are limits in the number of multispectral images (I guess there are not). Well, it is designed to give you the feeling of peeling of a real painting you are standing in front of. Otherwise, there are just other tools to switch among a collection of multispectral images.

Hi Antonino, its been so many years! I was thinking about restarting this research after seeing what was done by the http://insidebruegel.net/ project. It would be great to test the usability of new AR eyewear like Magic Leap or HololensII for this kind of interaction with Heritage. Write me if you may be interested in talking about that. Best.
