Training in Sweden, Feb 2018. Wall paintings

wall paintings Technical Examination Technical Photography Spectroscopy

Thanks to the kind collaboration with Misa Asp Conservation Studio in Stockholm, we delivered our 3-days Training program in Sweden, this February 12-14 2018. We focused on the 2 most effective methods specifically for wall paintings. We had the opportunity to practice on the case study of the medieval Jumkil church and we could collect informative data. The Training took place in the breathtaking Swedish countryside close to Uppsala in the Krosta Gard farm B&B.  This beautiful rural location hosts the Jumkil church where Misa Asp conservation Studio had almost completed a conservation treatment of its wall paintings. This was a perfect spot to test and practice our methods for art examination focusing on wall paintings.

During our Training programs, the students practiced the equipment and learned how to produce and interpret all the set of output data. The first-day we presented our Technical Photography kit to realize a set of broad spectral images. On the second day, we practiced Technical Photography in the Jumkil church in the morning and in the afternoon we presented Gorgias, our Reflectance Spectrometer for Art examination. Eventually, the Third day we got back to the church for further practice and analysis with Gorgias.

Jumkil church was built at the beginning of the 14th century and still retains much of the appearance it received then. Externally, only the Brick Gothic church porch is of later date, being added in the 16th century. Internally, the church received brick vaults in the 15th century, of which those in the choir are decorated with frescos by an unknown medieval master, depicting (among other motifs) the Coat of arms of Sweden and that of Jakob Ulvsson and Sten Sture the Elder. These wall paintings were the focus of our practice.

1st Day. Technical Photography

The first day is all about Technical Photography. We practiced with Pigments Checker to understand what information we can get from these images to identify pigments.

2nd Day. Practising Technical Photography on wall paintings

The second day was dedicated to practice technical photography documentation of the wall paintings of the Jumkil church.

3rd Day. Technical Photography and Reflectance Spectroscopy for wooden sculptures

Several medieval furnishings have been preserved in the church. The oldest is the baptismal font, dating from the late 12th century and thus pre-dating the church itself. It was probably made on Gotland by the master stonemason sometimes referred to as Master Semi-Byzantios. In addition, there are several wooden sculptures of saints housed in the church, including depictions of Mary and Saint Olaf which was the subject of the 3rd-day examination.
